KANSA by Prassant Kevin : Book Review
KANSA by Prassant Kevin : Book Review
A teenage boy in love with a
girl, who he gets to meet only during summer vacations every year, loses his
innocence with the murder of the girl’s uncle after the latter roughs her up. This
incident along with other developments with time – like, being kept away from
seeing his love for ever again – evolves him from a romantic teen into a
professor of criminology, famously known as Professor Black. The character of
Professor Black, who is the protagonist, and is approached by ACP Saargi for
solving a rather unusual case, has been well-developed.
Bizarre incidents of abduction
of pregnant women has resumed after a long time, which the people thought had
stopped for good. Pregnant women are kidnapped and murdered, after their
to-be-born children removed from the body. Maher, the only woman who successfully
escapes from the caption of the dreaded killer, popularly named as Kansa,
reveals her experiences to ACP Saargi and Professor Black. And they begin their
investigation. With each progressing chapter, bizarre secrets unfold which gets
the reader keep turning pages.
Let me acknowledge that it has
been quite some time since I read a book so paced and engrossing. Though nearly
400-pages strong, I finished it in two sittings: just before going to sleep at
night, and just after waking up the next morning. Had it not been for the language,
which is average, I would not have hesitated a bit in comparing the book to Dan
Brown’s books. However, in terms of keeping the reader at edge, Kansa is a
winner and can very well be compared with Agatha Christie’s or Dan Brown’s
works, and there is no exaggeration here.
I have not read previous works
of the author, Prassant Kevin, but reading this book – seeing how well the
story has been narrated in the mundane language – has convinced me to believe
that Thriller writing has a future in India.
Every Thriller reader must give
a try to this book Kansa by Prassant Kevin; it is totally worth its time (it
won’t take much of it though) and money (I got a free review copy, *winks). And
one of the most exciting things about the book is that it is a part of a trilogy.
Kansa is the first book in the Killer Trilogy, and I do acknowledge that I am
pretty impatient to read the upcoming books in the series.

Compensate the Past : Book Review
COMPENSATE
THE PAST
by Mohammad Israf
: Book Review
Most avid readers, who you find
busy with bulky books all the time, prefer to have light reads every once in a
while. They prefer to read some novels or stories which do not have much sophistication
and offer casual read and amateur satisfaction. These are the books for
pleasant times, meant to be read in that spirit. Compensate the Past by author
Mohammad Israf is one such book.
The protagonist of Compensate the Past, Rajat Rai, is a Management student who has had a pitiful past, legacy
of which he carries with himself all the time. And thus, he is filled with
determination in his heart to compensate his past. Rajat falls head over heels
in love with a classmate, Taniya, who is sweet and innocent and almost always
agrees upon anything Rajat says, except for the one time when Rajat proposes
her for the first time. Later in the story she discloses that she also loved
him, and then their journey of love begins, which lasts as long as their
studies. After getting jobs, Rajat’s love, Taniya, and his friend, Abhi, who is
another main character in the story, part ways with him, and Rajat returns to
his mother and his siblings to work for change from the ground level.
The story after that tells how
Rajat successfully manages to succeed with a social entrepreneurship and in his
love life. There are not many surprises in the whole story, if at all.
One of the innovative features
of the book lies in how the author has told the story, taking the help of
topics of study from Management, and has beautifully used them to describe the protagonist’s
past and his steps. The book can be read from cover to cover in one or two
sittings, and thus it provides the reader a short-run soothing experience. The
story does not bore the reader at any point, however there are times when it
gets really mundane. The language used in the book lacks depth and major
editing. It should have been much better at this front.
Overall, Compensate the Past is
a nice casual read, and possesses the capability to freshen one’s mood.
