KANSA by Prassant Kevin : Book Review
A teenage boy in love with a
girl, who he gets to meet only during summer vacations every year, loses his
innocence with the murder of the girl’s uncle after the latter roughs her up. This
incident along with other developments with time – like, being kept away from
seeing his love for ever again – evolves him from a romantic teen into a
professor of criminology, famously known as Professor Black. The character of
Professor Black, who is the protagonist, and is approached by ACP Saargi for
solving a rather unusual case, has been well-developed.
Bizarre incidents of abduction
of pregnant women has resumed after a long time, which the people thought had
stopped for good. Pregnant women are kidnapped and murdered, after their
to-be-born children removed from the body. Maher, the only woman who successfully
escapes from the caption of the dreaded killer, popularly named as Kansa,
reveals her experiences to ACP Saargi and Professor Black. And they begin their
investigation. With each progressing chapter, bizarre secrets unfold which gets
the reader keep turning pages.
Let me acknowledge that it has
been quite some time since I read a book so paced and engrossing. Though nearly
400-pages strong, I finished it in two sittings: just before going to sleep at
night, and just after waking up the next morning. Had it not been for the language,
which is average, I would not have hesitated a bit in comparing the book to Dan
Brown’s books. However, in terms of keeping the reader at edge, Kansa is a
winner and can very well be compared with Agatha Christie’s or Dan Brown’s
works, and there is no exaggeration here.
I have not read previous works
of the author, Prassant Kevin, but reading this book – seeing how well the
story has been narrated in the mundane language – has convinced me to believe
that Thriller writing has a future in India.
Every Thriller reader must give
a try to this book Kansa by Prassant Kevin; it is totally worth its time (it
won’t take much of it though) and money (I got a free review copy, *winks). And
one of the most exciting things about the book is that it is a part of a trilogy.
Kansa is the first book in the Killer Trilogy, and I do acknowledge that I am
pretty impatient to read the upcoming books in the series.
